Jakarta Opens Collaboration for Implementation of Air Pollution Control Strategies

The Jakarta Environmental Agency invited representatives of various elements of government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academics, and the general public to collaborate in implementing the Air Pollution Control Strategy (SPPU) which has been finalized.

"Today's event is an opportunity for the Jakarta administration to explain strategies and action plans for controlling air pollution, to gather support from relevant stakeholders, resulting in collaboration to improve air quality in Jakarta," expressed Development and Environment Assistant, Afan Adriansyah Idris, in the Public Expose of Air Pollution Control Strategies at Jakarta City Hall, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release, Tuesday (9/20).

SPPU, previously known as Grand Design for Air Pollution Control (GDPPU), is a comprehensive document containing strategies and action plans to mitigate the impact of air pollution in Jakarta. It will be a guide for the administration for the next eight years, precisely until 2030.

Environment Agency Holds Public Expose for Air Pollution Control in Jakarta

"This series of strategies includes air pollution control measures from upstream to downstream, from policy development and revision to supervision and law enforcement," explained Jakarta Environment Agency Head, Sep Kuswanto.

The SPPU contains a series of strategies for improving air pollution control management, as well as reducing air pollutant emissions from mobile and stationary sources. There are more than 70 action plans whose implementation requires cross-sectoral collaboration.

He added that the series of strategies in the SPPU is one of the steps taken by the administration in implementing the decision of the citizen lawsuit regarding air pollution, which was decided by the Central Jakarta District Court on September 16, 2021.

This step was initiated by collecting previous studies to identify sources of air pollution in Jakarta, one of which was emission inventory study in 2020 by the Jakarta Environment Agency. The SPPU preparation process also involved input from various parties, including through public consultations in December 2021, and internal discussions with related agencies on August 18, 2022.

"The Environment Agency is committed to being able to implement the SPPU by involving the participation of all parties, as mandated by the decision of the citizen's lawsuit," he concluded.
